Doug: you found the right metaphor!  The invisible backend (these days) tends to be either MySQL or PostgreSQL controlled by one of PHP, Perl or Python .  What users see is the "skin" (combination of HTML, CSS, and javascript) that gives a certain look and feel....  so when we compare them at that level, it really is a skin-deep beauty contest. Any feature one has that the other does not have would not take long for the latter to implement (if someone bothers to) since they are essentially all the same architecture
