It's from another mailing list from the International Institute for Educational Planning ([IIEP] see http://www.unesco.org/iiep/virtualuniversity/forums.php) that apparently copies to school-discuss.

Can an ignorant fat client ask about "thin clients"? Will they be a competitor for $100 laptops? What will they cost? What will they do? Would people need to travel from say Sierra Leone to say South Africa to set them up?

Well, I'm not Wayne or William but

They are an alternative method for setting up a low maintenance lab. The chief benefit is that the clients are basically no-maintenance boxes and you can use old computers.

Similar efforts to TuxLabs include the k12 Linux Terminal Server project (http://k12ltsp.org/ ).

It's not really a competitor to the $100 laptop.
