Re: [school-discuss] So long windows

Regarding running Linux in a Windows Lab.

For the past few years, I've used LiveCDs to run Linux in a Windows lab. I prepare Knoppix CDs for my students to boot their desktop computers while I boot my Windows XP portable from a USB stick.

By default, the Knoppix CDs do not write to the hard drives so existing Windows setups aren't impacted. Just make sure that your computer's BIOS supports booting from the CD. Most computers manufactured after 2001 should support this.

I've done workshops at a variety of labs at a variety of schools and have never had a hardware problem booting Knoppix. Though, I'm still careful to test it prior to the workshop. Be advised that Knoppix, like many LiveCDs, can have difficulty configuring the wireless network cards on some portables.

Knoppix comes standard with Open Office. Though, most of my students prefer Google Docs.

You can find more information about Knoppix at:
http://knoppix.net/

There is an older, but still relevant article at IBM developer's works:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-knopp.html

I posted some other links on an Angelfire page at:
http://www.angelfire.com/tx/netessentials/knoppixlinks.html

When I feel the need to monitor, I normally use a tool like Etherape which comes on several LiveCD distributions. (I use BackTrack.) For more information see:
http://etherape.sourceforge.net/

Please keep us informed concerning your Linux efforts.

Best of luck.
Uno

Georges Khaznadar, one of the managers of this project, used to be a member of this mailing list. He may still be. Here's the FreshMeat listing for labomanager:

It was intended to do what you're asking for, I think. But it hasn't been updated recently and I don't know it's status.
