[seul-edu] schoolforge content

I'd like to say something about my ideas on the schoolforge site, since
Roger posted the link to that primeval mock up of the site look.

To the bare minimum, I presume schoolforge should index:

a. Other sites related to education (because we have no intention
to replicate everybody else's work and we're not competing - we're
working together - also the current links on the mock up were picked
at random, I know there are more sites to be linked)

b. Existing applications. This would be like the one already
available at http://richtech.ca/seul (hmm, I'm too sleepy to
go look the correct URL, but I think that's the one)

c. Success Stories / Case studies.

d. Documents. It would include advocacy documents (why open source,
what open source, free software are and aren't, a quick guide on the
base open source packages - OSs, editors,
apache, php, MTAs, GUIs), and maybe HOWTOs specific to school-specific
issues (integrating Linux clients on Win servers and vice-versa)

e. (Doug's) Activity Reports.

f. Mailing Lists. We will probably end up running Mailman, so schoolforge
could take care of seul-edu and other lists that come up, as well as
   linking to external mailing lists.

Some spread thoughts on the above:

- The Center column on that prototype would have, in slashdoty looks,
announcements of the latest items that came in (of the a-f items
above). Except for great news like "US senate passes law prohibitting
proprietary software in schools and universities", we won't
be doing opensourceschools.org's work. It's meant to show things like
"Linux in Education report #67 is out" and "New educational application:
  GnomoBlinker Plus Lava Lamp Edition".

- most items above would be submitted thru the site. Some items
(like documents, activity reports) only by the admins themselves,
others (success stories, new applications) could be sent by
general public, but would need approval before showing up.

- does opensourceschools provide "headline exporting" (they call it
RDF, don't they ?) to build up /.-like sideboxes ? That would
  fulfill our hunger for news.

- I'm doing it in PHP, primary DB postgresql, but integrating the
current application index (MySQL) should be easy. I don't feel
like a Wiki is something to be used as front page for anything.
(But placing a Wiki somewhere below or link to a wiki on someone
   else's site looks ok)
