Re: [seul-edu] unsubscribing from this (or most other) lists

I believe this wave of unsubscribers is caused by the increase in traffic om the
list. There have been a lot of mails about the (very useful) iso-project the
last weeks, which may annoy people. I think it's a shame we're loosing these
subscribers, so maybe it should be considered to decrease the amount of traffic,
or to create a seperate list or something. On the other hand, the messages about
the iso project are clearly labeled in the subject, and can easily be filtered.

I suspect you're partly right about the reason for the recent unsubscriptions. But I think another part of it is a misperception on people's parts about the nature of this mailing list. When we started it over four years ago, it was the only place to talk about using Linux and other open source/free resources in education. Since then, many other websites/mailing lists/forums have been created to address this area, often because the creators weren't aware of any existing places to carry on such discussions. About a year ago we joined with as many of these organizations as we could persuade to do so in creating Schoolforge <http://schoolforge.net>. The Schoolforge coalition is intended as a place for people associated with all the various different groups to be able to meet and exchange information and encouragement on what they're doing to further the use of open resources in education.

Because we wanted Schoolforge to be a success, the various groups agreed to cede some of their functions to the coalition as a whole. Since SEUL/edu's seul-edu mailing list was the premier (yes, I'm bragging just a bit) venue for discussing Linux in education, we decided to redirect all general discussion on Linux in education to the schoolforge-discuss mailing list and to use the seul-edu mailing list primarily for topics directly relating to ongoing SEUL/edu projects.

So as things now stand, the seul-edu mailing list is properly for the discussion of the ISO project, the casestudies, and maintenance of the App Index. Of course, as we take on other projects this will be the place for discussing those too. For general discussion about using and advocating open resources in education, schoolforge-discuss is the preferred venue. That's both because we want Schoolforge to have a useful function and because discussion there gets the attention of all the other member organizations (we hope).
