What do you mean here exactly? Could you perhaps re-phrase this please. I don't
understand.

I don't think the OS kernel needs a multimedia API but there needs to be some
libraries that work well. That is to say. Can playback movie files with sound at
a proper speed and display it properly.

But what about CD-ROMs and dvd. Interactive games for children. I wouldn't like
to download gigabytes of data.
