This is a fantastic program. There is an excellent review of XEphem in
the current issue of Sky and Telescope
by Jeff Medkeff. The program is easy to install (lesstiff is required).
You can click on a sky map, center it, then download an actual image of
the sky from a star catalogue from one of two observatories. We've
installed it on an linux box in our new
math/science lab at the high shcool and the teachers love it (we have
yet to try it out on the students.)
