Get an old pentium or better 486 (and some network cards if you don't
have a network).  Put Smoothwall on it.  http://www.smoothwall.org. 
Smoothwall is a firewall, which also does internet sharing, has a
transparent proxy built in, and an intrusion detection system as well. 
It can also act as a DHCP server.  It takes up less than 200MB, and
takes only a few minutes to install.  It is fully GPL.

I would recommend it for anyone wanting to share an internet connection
or just as a real firewall (ie, one that actually sits between you and
the net).
