[seul-edu] directory of educational apps on Linux

For the past week or so, Doug, Roman Malonowa, and I have been discussing
the possibility of SEUL/edu "reclaiming" the Directory of Educational Apps
from its current hand-off to Freshmeat. Putting aside the more ambitious end
of what we discussed, a good basic start would be to take the material
already written by Doug for his weekly reports and put it in a categorized
directory. Have someone take responsibility for periodically (say, once a
month) verifying that the links in the directory are current ... and we have
a much better directory than what Freshmeat offers.

To that end, here's a short html snippet that illustrates what such a page
might look like. I apologize for the inconcenience of mailing html, but I
don't have a place to post the sample, and I would like those who can, and
who are interested, to look at and comment on it. It's just the header
material and the subject classification that I suggest for the directory.

BTW, I will be travelling, so away from e-mail, for the next week. So please
do not interpret my silence as lack of interest in your responses -- I will
read and reply to them when I get back.

In the meantime, here's a draft for you to look at ...

<html>
<head>
<title>Directory of Linux Software for Use in Education</title>
<link href="seul_edu.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
</head>

<body background="../images/c1grblue.GIF">

<table width="100%" border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="1">
	<tr>
        <th bgcolor="white">
          <a href="index.html">
            <IMG SRC="images/seuledu.jpg"
              BORDER="0" ALT="seul-edu Logo"></a></th>
        <th class="bright"><font size=7>
	  <b>Directory of Linux Software for Use in Education</b>
	  </font>
	  </th>
      </tr>
</table>

<p>This directory lists educational applications that run on the Linux
operating system. We include here both applications designed specifcially for
use in education and otehr applications that we believe are distinctly
interesting to educators. We do not include standard Linux applications,
such as Web servers and e-mail processors, for which use in schools is not
sharply distinct from use elsewhere.

<p>The directory is categorized as follows:
	<ul>
	<li><a href="#">Distributions Oriented to Education Use</a>
	<li><a href="#">Networking Tools</a>
	<li><a href="#">School Management Tools</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Computer Science - Programming</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Computer Science - Other</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Foreign Language Learning</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Geography</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: History</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Literature</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Mathematics</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Reading</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Research</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Science - Astronomy</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Science - Biology</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Science - Chemistry</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Science - Physics</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Science - Other</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Typing Skills</a>
	<li><a href="#">Applications: Writing</a>
	<li><a href="#">Hard to Classify</a>
	</ul>
