 Patch looks like something that could work but i also have no way of
 testing it.
 For the error messages i would mention these are functions it was looking
 for to communicate the issue better.

 FWIW i submitted #17744 because the configure script still contains
 instances where strings are compared without quotes but these are out of
 the scope of this ticket.
