Comment (by mikeperry):
With respect to turning on the background updater as per this ticket, I'm
wondering if there is any way to alert the user earlier that they should
restart. In ages gone by, there used to be a pref
app.update.nagTimer.restart, that would nag the user after a certain time
period that they should restart their browser. It appears this code has
been removed.
Now it seems that the only codepaths that lead to notification are when
the update download is complete, and it also seems that this notification
is disabled in onStopRequest in
./toolkit/mozapps/update/nsUpdateService.js (due to shouldShowPrompt being
false in our case).
Is there an easy way to restore the nagging behavior? I am now worried
that background updates may actually lead to people leaving their Tor
Browser running with the update downloaded and not be aware that they need
to restart (though I suppose the Torbutton nagging should help with it,
more nagging would be better :).
Should this also be a separate ticket?
