thats really sneaky but that doesnt have to be a forever unfixable

but thats all consumer electronics plus there is a big difference. for
those devices you only have to hack into one single device. if you hack a
tor hardware box you would only get one relay out of it. besides that
those chips came in normal plastic packages which can be dissolved with
acid. if you added something that destroys the chip when it gets in
contact with acid that would make it very hard to crack.
