Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math are remedial software in 
ever-expanding use nationwide. You can read about them at the 
Renaissance Learning site, www.renlearn.com. Many schools have had 
great results with them for bringing students up to speed. They are 
both expensive. It would be nice to have a Linux equivalent.
