Yes, this RedHat news is a bummer.

What is the opinion of this group on the Novell/SUSE purchase?

I hope that what happened to WordPerfect when Novell bought it
doesn't happen to SUSE.

Agreed, and that goes for Ximian as well.

It is probably Novell's only chance to survive, so hopefully current management wont botch it and bring SUSE and Ximian down with the ship. It is still unclear to me whether they really "get" free and open source software, but the are giving it a try.

Maybe Novell will end up with great support offerings for SUSE and Ximian and be able to survive. The markets seem to agree with the purchase with a 20% rise in NOVL stock today.

I've spoken at length with people in management and took their course on Linux with novell services.

http://www.novell.com/training/linux/linux_linux_book.pdf a relatively short but extremely enlightening piece.

I have done my due diligence, read all their SEC filings, tracked down management histories etc. I even did calculations on their stock prices, did timeline analysis of their financial statements, etc.

This is a new management team, very bright, very intelligent. They had a merger with Cambridge Technology Partners. It's a brand new, very exciting group of people. A new company.

If you have any lingering pictures of Novell, put them on the side of the road. This is all goodness for OSS. I can also tell you I was skeptical going into my review. So, this was a pleasant surprise.
