I'm coming in very late on this, but I've been doing some work with mediawiki, mwlib, openzim, and kiwix.

http://edutechwiki.unige.ch/en/Mediawiki_collection_extension_installation

http://openzim.org/wiki/Main_Page

If it all comes off, I hope to be able to create multimedia zim files for distribution directly from wiki pages.

Here's the pertinent thread; the pyzim library would have to be modified to support mutlimedia, and then probably some code tweaks to the kiwix reader.

My only disclaimer is that I am a consultant, doing this under contract for a company, so we'll have to see how much resources they want to put into it.

Commercially, we're looking at about 10,000 Euro to get it all working, but all of the projects are opensource, so it's quite possible to get it all done with just a time investment.
