Re: [school-discuss] Open Source Classroom Response Software "clickers"

So this will receive anonymous feedback during Formative Assessment... for example:

1.Answer with a 1-5 response for how well you understand this idea.

2. What is the repulsive force between 2 electrons 1 cm apart. The answer is: 1) 1N 2) 1.602N 3) etc. etc.

Yes that is precisely how it works.

So then we also need a test bank of questions, as well... (grin). I also have an online testbank system (very old), that could be dusted off and used to provide these.

Yes, or simply add a routine to parse the rich text output file from ExamView, and import them into the presentation program. Most textbooks these days come with prebuilt examview question banks. Also it seems like there is a current open source project with the same functions.

Could you outline how you see this working from the moment kids enter the room?

Currently this is what happens in my classroom. Students walk in the door and pick up their remote. They are numbered and each student has a specific remote assigned to them. When class starts I pull up PowerPoint and start with a short review quiz.

Ex. How many neutron are in a Carbon-14 nucleus?
a. 6
b. 8
c. 12
d. 14

The students respond using their remotes. While they are responding, a response grid at the bottom of the slide lights up their number to show them and me that the computer has received their answer. When all answers are in, I click on the slide and a bar char appears on the same slide showing percentages of who answered a,b,c etc. If all students got it right we move on, if not I may make a quick comment about the wrong answer that was picked by a significant percentage of students. Or I might decide to go into a longer explanation or even work another example.

We finish the quiz in the same way and then move on to new material. Along the way I can use the same process to check for understanding as I present new concepts, and depending on the level of understanding I can increase or decrease the pace of the lecture and/or increase or decrease the number of worked examples I provide. After lecture I collect the remotes and we might do a lab or work on the homework assignment or do some other activity.
