Re: First attempt to install LINUX failed

Hmmm....That doesn't sound good. I'm not familiar with RedHat 5.2...but I
have installed 5.0. I'm not exactly sure what you've done to achieve this
but it does sound similiar to an error I had the first time I installed
Linux. (I have an S3Trio with 2mb).
My problem was it couldn't achieve 16bit color on 800x600 resolution
mode...which it should. So I went into the X-windows configuration program
and played around with it until it worked. (I finally got it to work when I
set it to a 1mb S3trio.)
Anyways...Here is the steps I took to solving my X-windows problem.
Run Xconfigurator after you log in. It should run X-windows with a default
monitor and run the Xconfig tool. Make sure you have the correct Video
Card selected. And then check to make sure you have the correct resolution
selected. Make sure you have one color level selected. I'm not positive
but you should probably log in as the root user.
If you are running MetroX Server, run configX (cap sensitive)
If you are running XFree86, run Xconfigurator.
    I hope I was helpful,

We just got our first test computer and tried to install LINUX on it.
Everything works except X so far as I can tell. Here is the error
message I get:

after many messages of everything apparently going fine it hits this:

The modes it was trying were higher than those I had asked for. I am
presently only using an old 14 inch monitor, so I told it to only try
800x600 during installation.

The system:
Celeron300a
64 megs of RAM
S3 Virge DX w/4megs
8.4 gig HD
SB64

The installation was Redhat 5.2 "EVERYTHING"
I had 3 gigs assigned to LINUX, and "everything" was only 822 megs, so I
went for it.

Any ideas on what I should do? Is there a file I should edit, or should
I just wipe it and try again?
