Ok, the original question is "Are the Kandelians human or not?" I wrote the
story with the Kandelians being an extra-terrestrial intelligence, so that I
could write all kinds of neat stuff about Kandelian society and so forth
without having to deal with human psychology. Jens had been thinking of them
as a separated branch of humanity, with either common ancestors elsewhere
(i.e. Earth isn't the ancestral home of humanity), or with Earth as the
ancestral home of humanity but the Kandelians are an offshoot, possibly from
early space exploration, like the Vulcan/Romulus relationship.

So, show of hands, who wants the Kandelians to be alien, and who wants them to
be human? Any other ideas?
