The following states invoke orthogonality contraints when you press the control key:
ENDCOMP
ENDPASTE
ENDTEXT
The orthogonality constraints are implemented in the shared object place code, but should only be active for MOVE, COPY and MCOPY modes. (Not sure if the behaviour is quite right in MCOPY mode though.. orthogonality is always constrained w.r.t. the original object, not the last one placed, which could also be useful).
