Please let me know of any suggestions/corrections.

BTW, Ales, this illustrates the point I made about relying on
externally supported library objects (specifically GTK's GtkTreeView).
You never know when one of those nice, shiny, up to date libraries
will sprout a bug and bite you in a big way!
