You must be using an ancient version that required numbered
nodes.

You should be ok with 0.35, which is packaged for many Linux and
BSD distriributions.

If it says "0.34" or older, you need a new one.

You could use the development snapshot, which you will need to
compile yourself.

0.34 is the one available on FC6. I just built the 2007-03-29 snapshot, compiled the ngspice17-models, copied */*.so to a lib directory, pointed LD_LIBRARY_PATH to that lib directory, and I can now load the spice netlists with which I was playing earlier in the day.

From you comment, it sounds as if I may not have needed to compile the
ngspice17-modles, and perhaps I could have loaded my spice netlists
directly.  (They are extremly simple at the present time, consisting
of an independent voltage source, a capacitor, and a resistor -- as I
said, I'm starting off _very_ simple today).
