I guess step one would be to see if a developer can reproduce the crash.

As far as the x-y file, there is no standard at all, but you've already 
found this from Stuart.  If you want to view it, you best bet is to use 
awk, perl, excel, whatever to reformat it in the same format that pcb 
uses.  The pcb manual, which can be found on the web site 
http://pcb.sf.net, documents the x-y format used by pcb.

I know the gerbv parser can read that particular format.  I'm not sure 
if it can read any others.  In fact, I'm pretty tempted to just update 
the gerbv documentation to flat out state that it only accepts the pcb 
x-y format.

My guess is that positive angles would correspond to clockwise rotation, 
but I haven't worked with an assembly house in ages.
