If you choose your SMD chips carefully then SMD parts are not a
problem. If possible choose devices with larger pitches (1.27mm over
0.65mm). If you stay away from BGAs, LFCSP and so on you will be able
to solder just about anything with a decent soldering iron, flux and
some solder wick. Flux is important.... *really* important for devices
with less than 1.27mm pin pitch.

It will take some practice, and prepare yourself for accidentally
stripping pads off of a PCB. Make sure your pads have decent track
sizes connected to them and you should be okay - beware the
unconnected pad!
