I've had good luck with toaster oven soldering.  I make my own stencils, 
and squegee the solder on.  The trick is getting a *small* enough amount 
of solder to avoid bridges.  A toaster oven doesn't reduce the tweezer 
time, but it makes the soldering operation itself slick and quick, and 
the parts self-align so you get a neat looking end product.

But it certainly isn't necessary.  SMT with a small tip iron is 
perfectly doable.
