Quite some time ago Ales had proposed something (Ales, apologies if my 
memory of the details is not quite right) where the schematic would 
store a hash of the symbol.  Then it would be trivial to detect if a 
symbol on disk had been modified since it was instantiated.  This would 
also let you disambiguate which symbol you meant in case there happened 
to be 2 identically named symbols in your symbol search path.
