OK, another point of confusion. Going back to my example, on the ATMega88, pin 1 of the PDIP package is -RESET, while pin 1 of the TQFP and MLF packages is an I/O named PD3. I keep thinking that there is a file someplace that maps schematic pin names to footprint pin numbers -- but I get the suspicion now that is not the case. If the package pin number is taken straight off the schematic symbol without opportunity for remapping, then I am skewered -- I need different symbols. In my dreams the pin numbers printed on the schematic would also be conditional on the "footprint" attribute. I'm guessing gschem doesn't go there, although I suppose there is some way to filter the ASCII .sch file to twiddle the attribute values.
