You can usually get info about your distro (instead of the kernal)
using one of these incantations:

/home/sdb> cat /etc/issue

Welcome to SuSE Linux 9.3 (i586) - Kernel \r (\l).


/home/sdb> cat /etc/*elease
LSB_VERSION="core-2.0-noarch:core-2.0-ia32"
SuSE Linux 9.3 (i586)
VERSION = 9.3
