I have done a good bit of hand soldering of smt parts. Lots of trial and error. The smallest solder I have found is 0.015 inch. This is small enough. I think I got mine at digikey.

It would be really nice if solder paste didn't cost so much and spoil so quickly.

The tools I have found indispensible are:
-stereo microscope
-fine point weller iron
-hot air unit by hakko
-solder wick
