The v0.8 branch is the maintenance branch for the stable version.
The main trunk is currently more "bleeding edge" then merely cutting
edge. Most stuff doesn't work, it passes less then half the test
cases that the 0.8 branch passes.

As for gcc 2.96, well, hmm. The alpha package was compiled with
gcc 2.96.X, so 2.96 in general should be OK. Of course on AMD64
and PPC I use gcc-3.x.
