gEDA-user: Status of the Windows port of gEDA/gaf
Hello,
In view of the recent discussions about the Windows port, I think it is
time to make a progress report, and clear some misconceptions.
I have been building native gschem on Windows for some time. It is not
that hard, really. The existence of a native port of GTK is a great
help. I struggled with guile for a while, until I tried version 1.8.1,
which mostly builds out-of-the-box (yes, I am aware about the current
compatibility problems).
gEDA/gaf code is already quite portable, the past effort was not all
lost. Basically, when the compiler complains about missing symbols, I
just comment the lines around the offending function or macro. Usually,
gschem runs mostly fine in spite of the missing parts (no random crashes
or serious misbehaviors).
I do plan on submitting the patches eventually, but not in the raw stage
they are right now. First, I want to add proper tests to configure.ac,
providing suitable alternatives to the missing code. Then they will be
submitted, one at a time, with suitable explanations. In this regard,
some voluntary help is always welcome.
I would put off work on a Windows binary installer at least until most
issues are identified and resolved.
Regards,
Cesar
