You need to assume that /tmp might be cleared at any time,
perhaps by a cron job that runs every night, removing files
that are more than xxx hours old.
/tmp could be in memory, not a real disk.
Regardless of what you think of these ideas, software needs to
work correctly if someone configures their machine this way.
Many times, I have appreciated the fact that the ~ files were
there. Please keep it this way, at least by default.
