Thanks Ineiev. Just want to close this out.

Your guess is probably correct, though I did install PCB, it was
installed through the debian distro (usr/bin) rather than
in /usr/local/bin. I took a copy off of sourceforge onto /usr/local and
things are working as Bill Wilson's tutorial presents. Without these
tutorials I'm afraid the cryptic nature of these tools would be too much
for my simple mind. Thanks so much Bill and any other contributors to
this level of documentation. 

Anyway, one hurdle down, and many more in my sight now to overcome.
These tools are not intuitive to a newbie, but I am beginning to see the
seriousness of their functionality, and the complexities which go into
their design. 

Perplexed...
