I've never used the footprint attribute of gschem (so far), instead preffering to assign footprints
at the pcb stage by selecting the component footprint manually and naming it to the component number from my
gschem bom.

I use "gnetlist -gPCB gschem-file.sch -o pcb-netlist.net" to accomplish this.
