This is a great idea. I suggest gschem to run some kind of footprint collection script at the installation time and to organize the options according to the directories in which the footprints are. Later a feature could be implemented to improve the usability even more: if a footprint would be added, the system would detect it based on some time stamps and would add it into the list on interactive startup. Without actually rescanning the footprint directories on every gschem startup.

Non-interactive startups of gschem for printing purposes wouldn't be
affected not to slow things down.
