The problem here is that I did not copy anything into a paste buffer. I
used the "convert selection into element" function which (at least as
far as I can see) does not involve paste buffer.

After experimenting a bit with this, I found out that the mark is always
placed where the "select" menu currently is. This is probably the point
where the user interface last "saw" the mouse cursor in the viewport.
