gEDA-user: Question on the Netlist Field in PCB

Folks - 
    In the Netlist section of a PCB file a net has the following form:

NET("netname" "(unknown)")
(
Connect("node_member")
Connect("node_member")
...
)

My question is: What is the "unknown" field and what is it for?
