gEDA-user: help with symbol creation

I've been using gschem a few days and have been able to create a
schematic successfully with one exception, I need a symbol that doesn't
exist (or that I haven't found) in current version: a photo-voltaic
cell.

I'm trying to follow the instructions in the symbol creation guide but I
think there must be some steps missing. In particular:

Step two is just "draw the symbol". I have done this using the add line,
circle, pin, etc. But have two questions:

1. Do I need to lock the lines and circles and other drawing elements
together in some way (maybe the group option) as part of the "draw
symbol" process?

2. There is a long list of attributes that must be "attached", "placed
near", "placed in", and made to "exist somewhere in" the symbol. As a
new user, it's very difficult for me to tell when the documentation is
using terminology to differentiate technical aspects of the process vs.
just being inconsistent. (e.g. does "exist somewhere in the symbol" mean
the same thing as "placed somewhere in the symbol" or "placed near the
symbol"?).

From the attribute page, I gather just creating an attribute qualifies
as "placing near" or "placing in" the symbol but I'm not sure which. And
I'm not clear on how to actually attach an attribute to something. I see
there's an "attach attribute" item on the attribute menu but nothing
obvious seems to happen when I select it.

The gschem tutorials pointed out earlier were a huge help in getting
started. Is there a symbol creation tutorial out there somewhere?
