I suppose that users encounter problems, but just use u instead of µ,
etc as a simple workaround. They're probably annoyed, but think the
problem is not big enough to complain about it.

I think that whereever I input text things should work no matter what I
enter as long as it's text. I don't like being restricted to some subset
of characters.
