I apologize for all the problems, but it'd be nice to have one open-source simulation so I can use the geda suite in the future as often as possible.

It should work with just that definition, without any file - did you try
out ".model 1N4004 D"? Maybe that will work. Or maybe you hit "build"
and then enter either "model 1N4004 D" or ".model 1N4004 D".
