If the attribute is unattached within the symbol file, gnetlist will  
treat it as associated with the symbol, just as if it was attached to  
the symbol externally.

Some unattached attributes are "promoted" when you place the symbol:  
they are copied into the schematic itself and attached to the symbol  
at that level. That automatically changes their color. Note that you  
can turn off promotion of attributes like footprint= in your gafrc:  
for big projects I prefer to do this because then it's much easier to  
change, say, all footprints for low_noise_npn.sym. If it's promoted,  
you have to track down each instance and change each footprint.
