Depending on local copyright (e.g. in Germany [1], but apperently not in 
the US), the end user may have the right (!= granted permission) to 
translate the copyrighted work if it's necessary to use that work.
The DMCA prohibits circumventing copy-protection systems, but the land 
pattern are obviously (ASCII data) not copy-protected.
