I did the preliminaries of that last summer, looking to go towards a
dock-able toolbar approach. This was before the current re-write of the
component selector though, so the patch would be no good. The idea
seemed sound though, and a side-bar with recently used symbols is how
some other programs do things (and how users may be familiar with).
