Oh my! Yet another hidden restriction on names in geda that causes grief 
further down the road. Can we formulate a positive set of syntax rules a 
refdes, a footprint, or a value must conform to? There should be a sanity 
check included in gsch2pcb.

Sure. Can some of the developers confirm, that space in refdes is a 
problem? Syntax restrictions should be documented in other places too.
