Actually out of habit from building in the past I did have
--enable-maintainer-mode. Seems it was not supported in 2003,
when I was told "unknown option", forgot
to put it back in 2009. Maybe that testing of my time machine is
working after all...

Seeing things like this:

          Entering LaTeX 2.09 COMPATIBILITY MODE
 *************************************************************
    !!WARNING!! !!WARNING!! !!WARNING!! !!WARNING!!

Are always encouraging when building software. :-(

This mode attempts to provide an emulation of the LaTeX 2.09
author environment so that OLD documents can be successfully
processed. It should NOT be used for NEW documents!

New documents should use Standard LaTeX conventions and start
 with the \documentclass command.

Can you point me in the direction of the printer and postscript
export code, please?
