Assuming you don't bring the flux density in the iron core close to
saturation that is.

There will be some small magnetising current drawn (from the mains) too
- not sure if thats an issue in your application

If you wanted to pass signals on the mains lines, you might need more
bandwidth, or if you were trying to make measurement of harmonic content
etc... (of course I'm only speculating here).
