In gnome there is such a feature for the mouse pointer. Press the control 
key and some growing circles appear at the current mouse pointer 
position. This is not intrusive, but still telling. IMHO the locate mouse 
feature is off by default. It can be activated with the gconf key 
	/desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/locate_pointer
