I think that you are right in that there's these two problems, When I
installed, i had the exact problem that the installer didn't find
pkg-config. I tried to fix the installer but ran out of patience and
installed  the tools manually (and shamefully never got around to file a
bug report).

Maybe we can talk Stuart into installing Ubuntu in his new installation
lab :-).

A way of getting past this type of problems is perhaps to have the
installer take arguments like --pkg-config=/usr/bin/pkg-config. This
might be useful for using a special version of gcc etc. also. The root
problem would be solved with --su=/usr/bin/sudo then.

Not offering a patch since I never fully understood the code in the
installer :-(.
