I wonder whether it would make sense to add the whole gcc software that
matches ghdl along with and compile it all together? Also maybe not have
the resulting application be gcc, but called something else, so it could
live along with the gcc version of a native [linux] distribution for
example?

I tried installing it under cygwin and there for example the standard
gcc version is still 3.4. I did not want to change the that version and
my plan is now to use the appropriate gcc version along with ghdl, but
leave the standard gcc version untouched. I haven't ran through that
installation yet to see whether I will face other problems that I did
not consider with this approach.
