But a doorbell transformer is a whole lot cheaper than a PC. And with my 
wife the WAF for PCs next to the sub-panels would be pretty low. Also, 
Ethernet may open up this kind of solution:

Still, I'd try to run CAT5 through the attic or raised foundation. 
Cheaper, more reliable. However, I have no idea what the software 
overhead would be for a LAN version of such a project.

Ethernet-equipped alarm clocks? Wow. We aren't this modern out here. You 
guys probably also own a LAN-connected propane barbeque ;-)
