I am using Gentoo-Linux too.
pcb version 20080202 (GTK) from official gentoo ebuild works fine, only
some minor bugs. (AMD 64 dual core) 

Do you need latest features? If not you may test official gentoo ebuild.

Indeed screen refresh or redrawing is not extremely fast in pcb, but it
is more than fast enough for working (if all works well).

OK, I see there is already a reply from one of the pcb developers...
